You’re shooting a movie and want to make people cry. Sounds simple enough right. Most people would throw sad music over a sad scene and be done. However the pro’s at Pixar don’t follow that route. As you’ll see in the video linked by Sideways its not that straightfoward.
They break down how movies such as monsters ink and other Pixar movies use happy music to make us cry. But happy music…that’s counterproductive. Sideways explains that they use happy music in happy scenes early on in the movie to establish a theme. Then WAMMM…later on they play that same music over a sad scene making your mind return to the scene it played on originally. With the right semantics it should be enough to make you cry.
